Most people in Fiji do not own a car, so taxis are plentiful and fares are reasonable. For instance, FJ$2.50 will take you just about anywhere in the average town or city. Urban taxis have meters, with a flag at $1.50 and $2.00 after 10.00pm. But you will find smaller towns and rural area taxis use a fixed price system and almost everyone can tell you the price to local destination.  For long trips, bargain with the driver. Often he'll reduce the fare if you allow him to pick up other passengers going the same way. Some taxis can also be hired by the day or half day for a fixed price, often the equivalent of a rental car.

While the law allows for taxi operators to negotiate a fare with the passenger if the proposed destination is more than 16 kilometres from the Airport, it must not exceed the fare that would be charged had the meter been turned on.

Travellers disembarking at the Nadi International Airport and members of the public are reminded that they must demand for the meter to be turned on before proceeding on a trip. The taxi driver cannot refuse to turn the meter on if requested by the passenger.
Fares for

The following are the maximum fares for journeys by taxis with mechanical taximeters:

1.    Flag fall - $1.50
2.    For each or part of 230 meters after flag fall – $0.10 (10 Cents)

The following are the maximum fares for journeys by taxis with electronic taximeters:

1.    Flag fall- $1.50
2.    For the first or part 250 meters after flag fall- 14.2 cents
3.    For each or part of 250 meters after the first 250 meters –10.7 cents.

Round down to the nearest number of whole cent.

However:

1.    Additional charges or payments may be added to the maximum fares set out above for journeys outside Viti Levu, for waiting time, for night journeys and in repayment of tolls and ferry charges incurred as set out below in Additional Charges.

2.    Operators may charge below the maximum fares and charges.

Additional charges:

Additional charges may be added to the maximum fare set out in paragraph 1 as follows:

1.    Charges for journeys outside Viti Levu.

An additional charge of 5 cents for each separate journey may be made in respect of all journeys outside Viti Levu.

2.    Charges for waiting.

If a taxi is required to wait for a period either before, during or at the end of a journey, additional charges for waiting may be made at the rate of 25 cents for each 5 minutes of each separate period of waiting time. Special hours rates

Additional charges at the rate of 50 cents for each journey may be made for the hire of taxis between 10pm to 6am.

3.    Tolls and ferry changes.
A hirer of a taxi must reimburse -
o    Any tolls and ferry charges incurred during a hiring; and
o    Any charges which will have to be incurred in respect of the vehicle on its return journey to the place from where the hiring commenced.

Miscellaneous

1.    Delay by driver.
No change is to be made for a period during which a vehicle is delayed because of a shortage of petrol or diesel or because of any accident or as a result of a mechanical or other defect, or through any event or incident which is within the power of the driver to prevent.

2.    Delay by police or authorised officer.
No charge is to be made for a period during which a vehicle is delayed because of the instruction of police or authorised officer given under the provisions of the Act

3.    Journeys made by taxi to a picking–up point.
If a taxi driver by appointment travels to a pick-up point (in this paragraph referred to as 'the specified place') to pick up a hirer or his or her luggage or goods to another place, no charge is to be made for the journey of the taxi to the specified place and the following procedure applies

- drivers must, on arrival at the specified place, give reasonable notice to the hirer personally of the arrival of the taxi;
- if a taximeter is affixed to the taxi, the driver must set the taximeter in motion at the time of giving notice of arrival to the hirer or at the time appointed for the arrival of the taxi at the specified place, whichever, is the later, and the hiring and the journey must be regarded as commencing when the taximeter is so set in motion and no sooner; and

- if a taximeter is not affixed to a taxi, the hiring and journey is regarded as commencing at the time of giving the notice of arrival to the hirer or at the time appointed for the arrival of the taxi at the specified place, whichever, is later and no sooner.
